Anthony,

As far as my experience goes with EC2, the latency is already somewhat high. If you are concerned with the latency induced via travel across the ocean then it might make sense to look at managed hosting. Its not quite as flexible as cloud computing but still somewhat abstracts you away from the hardware.

The great thing about EC2 is it doesnt cost a lot to play around with it for a bit. I suggest you sign up for an account and see for yourself if the latency is acceptable.

Thanks for sharing the experience. We're considering the same path though our challenge is that our site visitors are mostly from Asia and the latency going through EC2 servers in the US are high. Any thoughts?

Justin: very nice write-up. We always appreciate feedback and I'm curious why you're seeing boot times in excess of 10 minutes. We've seen that when installing lots of rubygems or when installing software from source. But otherwise it should be on the order of 4-8 minutes.
Also, suggestions on how to improve our Apache set-up would be very appreciated. We strongly believe in working on the issues our customers complain about or suggest, so this is great. Email our support and it'll get tracked on our end. Contact me anytime you have issues with our service. Cheers!

"Also, there are many hidden costs associated with IT maintenance."

Now there's an understatement! :)

For growing web operations, the cost of finding and acquiring your own systems, storage, and network engineers alone tips the scale in favor of a cloud style solution. Not that you still won't need these types of engineers, but now you can focus them on things that add value to your business.

Justin; this is a great piece because it is also business oriented and talks specifically to the operational tradeoffs of rolling your own versus cloud computing.

Best of all, your story is about an actual decision and the financial freedom it gives you moving forward. Most every technical challenge can be met if only you have the money to buy the time to make it right.

From that standpoint EC2 coupled with the forthcoming Elastic Block Storage (EBS) for persistence is a radical improvement over shelling out the big bucks.

Thanks.
